¿Qué es Carplay y Android Auto y como afecta a Opel?

Hello Blitzers!

In the era of automotive technology, CarPlay and Android Auto are two concepts that have revolutionized the way we interact with our vehicles. But what exactly are they and how do they work?

Both were created to solve a common problem: how to use your phone in the car safely and easily, without compromising safety . They're not ordinary apps, but rather a kind of "bridge" between your phone and the vehicle's multimedia system.

How do they work?

  1. Connecting your mobile phone to your car

    • They connect via USB cable or wirelessly (in more modern cars).

    • When connected, the car displays a customized version of your phone on its screen.

  2. Simplified interface

    • Only useful apps for driving are shown: maps, music, calls, messages.

    • The icons are large and easy to touch, even while driving.

  3. Voice control

    • You can say things like “call dad” or “play some Queen music.”

    • Use Siri (CarPlay) or Google Assistant or Gemini (Android Auto) to help you without touching anything.

  4. The mobile does the work

    • The car only displays what the phone sends to it, so how "outdated" the car's infotainment system is doesn't matter.

    • It's like the car is an external phone screen.

When were they released?

  • CarPlay was launched by Apple in 2014.

  • Android Auto arrived shortly after, in 2015, developed by Google.

What are they for?

  • Display GPS navigation on the car screen (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze).
  • Play music or podcasts from apps like Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music.
  • Send and receive calls or messages using voice commands, including from WhatsApp or other messaging apps.
  • Use virtual assistants (Siri or Google Assistant) to control functions without touching your phone.

Main advantages

  1. Driving safety

    • You can use voice commands to avoid distractions.

    • The interface is simplified to make it easy to read and use while driving.

  2. Comfort

    • Quick access to your favorite apps without taking your phone out of your pocket.

    • You can continue listening to your music or receive directions without any complications.

  3. Constant updates

    • Google and Apple improve these systems with new features every year.

  4. Compatibility

    • Works on most modern cars.

    • You can connect via cable or wirelessly (on newer models).

  5. Personalization

    • You can choose which apps appear on your car screen.

    • Adjust the layout to your preferences.

Which Opel/GM cars are compatible?

  • Models prior to 2016 are generally not supported.
  • There are models after 2016, such as the Astra J, Meriva B, Cascada, or Ampera, that never received this functionality.
  • There are models from late 2015 and early 2016 that are only compatible with CarPlay and Android Auto.

What about models that are not supported?

This is where Blitz Motorworks provides solutions where Opel hasn't. We offer 100% native solutions or interfaces like OpelLink (link) that will enable CarPlay and Android Auto while maintaining the vehicle's original functions, without modifying the dashboard's aesthetics, and with such a high level of integration that it will seem like it was always factory-installed.

For Insignia A models from 2014 onwards, we can install an original HMI2.5 to enable this function. For Corsa E/Adam models with an R3 radio, we can upgrade the radio to an R4. For the rest, OpelLink is the solution.

Remember that we can activate the reversing camera natively; installing one of our kits is the perfect time.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have; we're here to help.

All the best.
